Native to India and Asia, its root has been used since the dawn of time in pharmacopoeia, particularly in Chinese and Ayurvedic medicine. Once crushed, the costus root powder can be consumed to reduce stomach aches or nausea for example.

This root was also used for centuries by wise perfumers because it offers a spicy scent reminiscent of ginger. It also spreads off intense animal notes and plastered and dusty nuances. This racy smell was used in the composition of many men’s fragrances. However, this highly allergenic substance was quickly banned in cosmetics. From now on, it is thanks to synthetic molecules that we can reproduce the so particular odor of this plant.

The Indian costus, also called marine costus, is an herbaceous plant that belongs to the Asteraceae family.
